Best Picture Oscar Nominees for 2022
We’re still quite far away from the 2022 Oscars, but we can already predict what films are going to be big contenders at that time. After all, Best Picture winners often win because of their craft and artistic merit, not because of their commercial success, and we can already guess which movies are going to be considered masterpieces in three years time. Here are our best picture Oscar nominees for 2022.
10 Years from Now
The best picture nominees of the year 2022 are: Avengers: Age of Ultron, The Dark Knight Rises, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Inception, and Toy Story 3. All these movies deserved a nomination but they were all beat out by one movie- Finding Nemo 2. Pixar has made a lot of great movies but none have been able to live up to the original or just be in that league- until now. Nemo’s story continues in this sequel, 20 years after the first one came out.
Can you Ever Forgive Me?
Set in New York City during the mid-1990s, Can You Ever Forgive Me? tells the true story of celebrity biographer and lifelong literary upstart Lee Israel (Melissa McCarthy) who made her living in the 1970s and 1980s profiling the likes of Katharine Hepburn, Tallulah Bankhead, Estée Lauder and journalist Dorothy Kilgallen. When Lee finds herself unable to get published because she has fallen out of step with current tastes, she turns her art form to deception. With the help of her friend Jack Hock (Richard E. Grant), a washed-up artist turned pet portrait painter, Lee creates rare first editions by forging letters from dead authors like Ernest Hemingway and T. S. Eliot, then sells them at deep discounts to major bookstores like Barnes & Noble—sometimes at prices as low as $20 a pop. It's this lack of remorse that eventually catches up with her when she tries unsuccessfully to pull off one final con just before being diagnosed with cancer in 2003
The Favourite
In order to win the Award for Best Picture, the film must be a drama or comedy with at least 90 minutes of total run time. The Favourite was nominated in this category and is a period piece set in 18th century England. It tells the story of Queen Anne's relationship with her close friend Lady Sarah and a newcomer to court, Abigail. The storyline follows their friendship, which turns into a lesbian love affair after Abigail enters into a competition with Sarah to win Queen Anne's favour. The movie stars Olivia Colman as Queen Anne, Emma Stone as Abigail, and Rachel Weisz as Sarah.
The Old Man & the Gun: Directed by David Lowery and starring Robert Redford, Sissy Spacek and Casey Affleck, The Old Man & the Gun is an American-British crime-drama about a man who has been pursued for over two decades by detective John Hunt who finally catches him on one last heist.
Green Book
With a story that centers around racism, Green Book is one of the most powerful films of 2019. With an all-star cast consisting of Mahershala Ali, Viggo Mortensen, Linda Cardellini and many more, this film won the top prize at both the Toronto International Film Festival and New York Film Festival. One day before its release, Peter Knegt from IndieWire tweeted Green Book will sweep the Oscars on Sunday night. So I wouldn't get too attached to any other nominees. It's safe to say that with such heavy praise, this movie has already won best picture of oscar in 2022
If Beale Street Could Talk
Beale Street is an upcoming drama from director Barry Jenkins. It will be his second film after Moonlight, which won Best Picture in 2017. The film is based on a novel of the same name written by James Baldwin. Set in early 1970s Harlem, it tells the story of a young African-American man named Fonny and his childhood friend Tish who grew up together and later married when they were older. When Fonny was falsely accused of rape, he was sentenced to twelve years in prison.
Mary Poppins Returns
It's not a sequel, but MARY POPPINS RETURNS is still a worthy follow-up. Aptly updated to the modern world, this film manages to stay true to the original while also feeling fresh and new. Emily Blunt does a wonderful job as the grown-up version of everyone's favorite nanny, and Lin Manuel Miranda provides some much needed lightheartedness as her on-screen brother who has trouble adjusting to life with Mary Poppins. The script often seems too self-aware, leaning heavily into its campy feel at times. Still, it never feels like it undermines the emotional depth of the story or prevents us from believing in these characters or their journey.
A Star is Born
The movie was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Motion Picture in the Academy Awards 2019 . It is a remake of the 1976 movie starring Barbra Streisand. There are four other movies that were also nominated and include A Quiet Place, Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, and Bohemian Rhapsody. All of these movies had something different to offer audiences with A Star is Born's (2019) musical element. A Quiet Place has incredible suspenseful moments while Black Panther highlighted how racism has permeated society. BlacKkKlansman is based on a true story about an African-American police officer who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan in Colorado. Finally, Bohemian Rhapsody highlights Queen frontman Freddie Mercury’s rise to fame and his eventual fall from it due to AIDS.
